A Microbiological Study on the Cockroaches Collected from Houses

Abstract
Cockroach is an infectious disease vector, and it proves to be of much importance in the public health. Considering such importance, the author surveyed the sticking microorganisms of cockroach in the housing area-habitat at western type house, Korean type house, apartment, inn, restaurant, hospital-of Seoul city from April 1973 to the end of August 1973, and tested total viable bacterial count, coi coliform group, Escherichia coli, and pathogenic staphyllococci, and have come to the following conclusions:
1. Average total viable bacterial count by habitat was at restaurant ?? the maximum case, at inn ?? the minimum case.
2. Average total viable bacterial count by body length was at 25¡29 mm groups ?? the maximum case, at 15¡19 mm groups ?? the minimum case. Total viable bacterial count increases with increasing of the body length.
3. Average total viable bacterial count by species ws on Blattella germanica ??, on Periplaneta japonica ??.
4. No variation was found on the average total viable bacterial count by sex.
5. Coliform group positive percentage was 95.6%, and each 15 samples were coliform group positive at Korean type house, apartment, and restaurant.
6. Escherichia coli positive percentage was 10%, at Korean type house and restaurant 20% the maximum cases, and Escherichia coli negative at apartment and hospital.
7. No pathogenic staphylococci are found in the tested.
